Supporting next-gen materials: Which innovations can demonstrate reliability, affordability and scalability?

10:45 - 11:30
The spotlight is on next-gen materials at the Spring/Summer 2025 fashion weeks, where global brands are showcasing innovative feedstocks and processes. But as we move beyond ‘proof of concept,’ how long will it be until these materials transition from the catwalk to our wardrobes?

Historically, it takes 30-40 years for new materials to achieve mainstream production. Are our expectations too high, or can we fast-track adoption without compromising quality? The journey of Circulose—formerly Renewcell—illustrates both the challenges and determination needed to meet the rising demand for sustainable materials.

In this session, we will learn from industry pioneers debating:

  • Key barriers: Examine the specific challenges, such as cost, that hinder market access for next-gen materials.
  • Brand responsibility: What role should brands play in overcoming these obstacles? Are offtake agreements the missing key to success?
  • Managing unintended consequences: How can the industry support a balanced approach to innovation, embracing diverse feedstocks while improving existing textiles?
