In brief...
At a closed-door workshop held alongside the Sustainable Apparel and Textiles Conference, sustainability leaders from brands, suppliers, NGOs, and financial institutions gathered to address a critical question facing the apparel industry: how can decarbonization move from fragmented pilot projects to coordinated, system-wide action?
The workshop was co-led by Made2Flow, a decarbonization technology provider focused on the apparel and textile industry, and Innovation Forum.
What became clear throughout the discussion is that ambition for supply chain decarbonization is high, but scaling these efforts is often constrained by operational strategy and execution gaps.
Below are the key takeaways from the workshop: five core pillars of an efficient and actionable supply chain decarbonization strategy. The focus is not on theory, but on the practical foundations required to drive measurable progress across complex supplier networks.
Credible benchmarking across facilities
A robust decarbonization strategy starts with understanding where emissions truly occur and understanding the potential of impact savings of each facility based on their production, based on an agreed industry format; in fashion, the Apparel Impact Institute’s Energy and Carbon Benchmark can be used as a reference framework.
Key elements
- Leveraging existing datasets and industry frameworks, such as FEM, FDM, and Made2Flow databases
- Enriching and completing missing inventory data through seamless, easy-to-share solutions powered by AI-driven technologies
- Transparent emission factors
- Identification of performance gaps across similar sites
- Auto generation of impact saving goals
A holistic, data-centric decarbonization system
Supply chain decarbonization is a complex process shaped by constantly evolving variables, requiring the use of a dedicated platform. Leading organisations adopt a centralised approach that integrates all decarbonization efforts into a single system following clear decarbonization KPIs.
Key elements
- Central platform to track all initiatives across the supply chain
- Real-time monitoring of progress and bottlenecks
- Scenario modelling to evaluate ongoing intervention options and trade-offs
Data sharing and collaboration with peer brands
Suppliers are shared across multiple brands. Working in isolation leads to duplicated efforts and inefficiencies.
Key elements
-
- Secure data-sharing between brands working with shared suppliers, including visibility into ongoing action plans and decarbonization initiatives.
- Joint engagement with shared suppliers (capacity building, energy efficiency programs, PPAs, etc.)
- Cost-sharing mechanisms for decarbonization initiatives
Ecosystem collaboration with external stakeholders
Decarbonization requires collaboration capabilities that extend beyond internal teams and suppliers.
Key elements
- Partnerships with local NGOs and technical experts both in-person and virtual for implementation support
- Funding: grouping suppliers to improve financing options and terms
- Continuous knowledge exchange across the ecosystem
Supplier incentivization and enablement
Suppliers are central to decarbonization but often lack the resources or incentives to act.
Key elements
- Preferred supplier status linked to sustainability performance
- Access to financing or co-investment opportunities
- Technical support and capacity-building programs
Conclusion
The workshop concluded with a clear sense that the textile and apparel industry is approaching an inflection point.
Many of the foundational building blocks already exist; the next challenge is to implement robust, practical systems that enable suppliers of all sizes to participate and scale decarbonization efforts effectively.
