Kantamanto Market

Mary has been working in Kantamanto Market since 2007. She sells men’s joggers and jeans.

Formerly a civil servant with Ghana Water and Sewage, Mary transitioned into entrepreneurship to gain flexibility and time for her children after starting a family.

Her journey into Kantamanto was driven by a desire for independence, freedom and self-determination. A memorable highlight of her work was discovering 80 in the pocket of a jogger — a joyful surprise she shared with her kids. On the average day, an influx of low value fast fashion clothing has made it difficult for Mary to achieve her goals.

Mary champions financial independence for women, encouraging others to rely on their own means rather than on partners or spouses. To her, Kantamanto is more than a place of business — it’s a vibrant community of strength, support and learning. As a proud member of the new Kantamanto Women’s Association, she advocates for unity, a shared voice and better protection for market women to stand up and work with purpose.
