INC5.2: Where do we go from here?

The last round of negotiations for a Global Plastics Treaty ended without agreement on the path forward: what does this mean for business strategy, compliance and risk?

The Business Coalition for a Global Plastics Treaty commissioned modelling showing that a plastics treaty with harmonised, binding rules on design, EPR, and phase-outs could cut mismanaged waste by 23%, increase global recycled content availability by about 77% by 2040, and generate around US $576 billion in global EPR revenue. Clear global obligations would reduce business risk in transitioning away from business as usual, and save governments up to US $220 billion in waste management spending.

Despite this economic rationale and strong backing from the Coalition’s 300+ member organisations, the last round of negotiations for a Global Plastics Treaty ended without agreement on the path forward.

This webinar is a pragmatic checkpoint: What does an inconclusive outcome mean for business strategy, and what enabling conditions—policy, finance, and system capacity—are needed to deliver on ambitious goals?

You can register for the complimentary webinar at this link.

The expert panel will address:

  • Why business wants ambition: Commercial and economic case for a strong Treaty
  • Change already underway: Shifts in packaging design choices, business models and waste management systems that are happening beyond the Treaty process. What solutions are working to tackle the plastics crisis, and what aren’t?
  • From ambition to scale: What’s needed to ensure fair and effective implementation of solutions across industries and waste systems (including support for waste pickers)

You can find more information on the panel in the registration page.
